Pilot Boats

Ships entering or leaving ports (other than their home port) are escorted through bays and harbors by “pilots.” The pilots arrive in a small boat that pulls up alongside the ship, a ladder is thrown over and the pilot most gracefully comes onboard. They then go to the bridge and assist the captain in navigating through port area waters and proceed to leave the same way they came in!

Sidenote: I got drenched taking this picture, it was like sitting front row at the Shamu show at SeaWorld. Note to self, do not stand on the main deck to watch the pilot boat.
