Clockwork

Time on a research vessel is pricey (~$40,000 per day!), so we work on a schedule that assures every second is fully utilized. Bottles for the rosette pictured here, for example, are loaded and ready to go while approaching station so that they can be deployed as soon as the boat stops. The next sampling team is staged and ready to go while the rosette is being recovered, so they can deploy their equipment as soon as the previous cast is on deck. We even have a specialized pump that continuously collects surface water samples while we transit from one station to the next, sampling never stops!
