What is GEOTRACES?

The research cruises described in this blog were funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation as part of the U.S. GEOTRACES program. GEOTRACES is an international effort to study trace elements and their isotopes in the world’s oceans. The overarching goal is to understand marine chemistry in the past and present to better predicted the future of our global ocean in a changing climate. The map below outlines GEOTRACES cruises that are completed or currently in progress. Years of planning goes into each cruise with cooperation from multiple countries – crossover stations between cruises from different nations are often planned as intercalibration exercises to ensure consistent results.
